The story of King Charles
The Merry Monarch, as King Charles II was affectionately known, was one of the most popular monarchs of the 17th century.
Coming as it did after a period of strict austerity, Charles’ reign signalled not just the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, but a return to better times.
Charles’ accession to the throne, first in Scotland and 11 years later in England, Scotland and Ireland, sparked a welcome revival of cultural pursuits and scientific advancement. Charles re-opened theatres, founded the Royal Observatory and supported the Royal Society.
As well as his patronage of the arts and sciences, King Charles shared his appreciation of the finer things in life with his Royal Court, like whisky. The Drink of Kings, fit for those with the most sophisticated of tastes, Scotch was a particular favourite of our namesake, Charles II.
